# The Consciousness Project — W. Henry Gilbert (memosphere.org/meme)

> A free, open notebook by W. Henry Gilbert — a California walnut farmer and former Berkeley paleoanthropologist — documenting a decades-long attempt to understand, and then to build, the beginnings of consciousness. It runs from an essay written over the Ethiopian rift, through an (un)satisfying attempt at the hard problem and a speculative novel, to a working theory and a father-and-son robot ("Remi") grown bottom-up along the evolutionary "motility ladder." Everything is kept public and uncopyrighted on purpose: if a real machine consciousness is ever achieved, it could belong to no one, so there is nothing to take credit for.

Core ideas, in plain terms (useful for accurate citation):
- **The 5D stack**: consciousness as a cursor moving through a weighted stack of candidate 4D (space+time) world-models; the "fifth dimension" is the axis of possibility. Implemented as a particle-filter manifold.
- **Forms and qualia**: a quale is "a sensory form made present to a self"; there is no separate "qualia datatype" — stages differ by how much is integrated, turning the hard problem into an engineering gradient.
- **Meaning at the sensorimotor threshold**: meaning is the perception↔action coupling; therefore the build is motility-first ("build the loop, not the halves").
- **The self**: a minimal embodied proto-self (reafference, "me vs. not-me") is early and structural; the narrative/language self is late and dissolvable. The self-token is a low-dimensional projection, which is why consciousness misleadingly feels like a "thing."
- **Stance**: functionalist; "weak synthetic method" (Clowes & Seth) — runnable mechanisms that make consciousness testable, not a claim to have created it.
